Must-See Attractions on Fraser Island

To kick off let’s unpack the top attractions on Fraser Island and what to expect at each of them.

1. Lake McKenzie: Crystal-Clear Freshwater Lake

Lake McKenzie is undoubtedly one of the most iconic attractions on Fraser Island. This crystal clear water of this two-toned freshwater lake is nestled in the heart of the island and is surrounded by white sand beaches.

You can swim, sunbathe, or just relax on the beach and soak in the breath-taking surroundings.

Lake McKenzie is one of my all-time favourite places in Australia, the water is just that spectacular I could swim in it all day!

2. Eli Creek: Natural Lazy River Perfect for Swimming

Next, we have Eli Creek (also known as Fraser Island lazy river), a freshwater creek that flows directly into the ocean on the eastern coast.

​Eli Creek is a natural water park. Bring a blow-up pool toy and float down the swiftly flowing creek. Enjoy the pristine fresh water as the stream carries you through the tranquil rainforest out to the coastline.

3. Maheno Shipwreck: Iconic Rusted Shipwreck on the Beach

Another attraction that is a key draw card of visiting Fraser Island is the Maheno Shipwreck that sits along the shores of 75 Mile Beach.

The wreck is a fascinating piece of Fraser Island’s history. The rusted remains of this once-great ocean liner have been lying on Fraser Island’s eastern beach since 1935 when it was washed ashore during a cyclone. It is a popular attraction for travellers who enjoy exploring the remains of the ship on a beautiful beach and learning about its history.

Only a short drive on the beach from Eli Creek, it’s worth combining the two attractions into one day trip.

4. Seventy-Five Mile Beach: For 4WD Adventuring

Speaking of Seventy-Five mile beach, a visit to the iconic stretch of sand is a must.

Not only is it thrilling to drive along the beach that spans the length of K’gari’s east coast ,it is also a stunning sandy beach to swim, sunbake and fish. There aren’t many beaches in Australia that are so gorgeous and that you can 4WD on. This sandy highway provides access to some of the top sights including the Maheno shipwreck, lazy river Fraser Island / Eli Creek, the Champagne Pools, and Indian Head.

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for some native Australian animals. You might spot dingoes, sugar gliders, brushtail possums and more. Before you head off, I’d recommend you read up about dingo safety.

5. Lake Wabby: Where Sand Dunes Meet Water

Next, we have Lake Wabby, a stunning lake that is one of the most popular Fraser Island destinations, and for good reason. With its emerald-green waters, golden sand dunes, and lush vegetation, Lake Wabby is a true natural treasure.

Located on the island’s western side, Lake Wabby is a unique combination of a huge sand dune which has a freshwater lake at its base. As such, it is an extremely popular place to go sand tobogganing and attracts people from all over the world.

Pop on your swimmers and walking shoes and take a cruisy 45-minute walk from the parking lot through the island’s rainforest to arrive at Lake Wabby.

Not quite as huge as the famous Pinnacles in Western Australian, but a close second. The Pinnacles are towering sand dunes that stretch along the eastern coast of Fraser Island.

K’gari (Fraser Island) Day Tour

This full-day (9 hours) comprehensive tour visits all of Fraser Island’s most photographed landmarks in one day. You will visit iconic spots mentioned-above including Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, Seventy-Five Mile Beach, Central Station, Wanggoolba Creek, the Maheno shipwreck, and the Pinnacles.

Learn about the animal and plant life both on land and in the ocean, where dolphins, dugongs, sharks, and humpback whales can be spotted.

Get picked up from your hotel and depart early from Hervey Bay by the Fraser Island ferry (all transfers included). You will travel aboard a custom air-conditioned 4WD coach with a local guide, and the cost includes lunch and all National Park fees.

This 2-day tour is great if you have the time as you will really have the opportunity to experience all the attractions on Fraser Island at a slower, and more relaxed pace.

Whale watching on Fraser Island is an experience like no other. The waters surrounding the island are home to a variety of sea life including fish and dolphins. However, during whale season, all eyes are on the majestic humpback whales that pass by.

During the Remote Fraser Island & Whale Experience Tour, you’ll visit the more remote parts of the island that many visitors skip, and have the opportunity to go bushwalking, snorkelling, kayaking and swimming.

As you watch from your boat or swimming spot near the coast of Fraser Island’s waters, keep an eye out for some incredible displays of behaviour from these massive animals. You may get lucky enough to see them breach out of the water entirely or slap their tails against the surface as they swim. And, if the conditions are right, swim in the sea beside them.

This 9-hour tour departs for Hervey Bay at 7:30am and is reviewed exceptionally well!

Top Tip: If you’re planning a trip to Fraser Island, be sure to schedule it between July and November. This is the season when humpback whales migrate along the east coast of Australia, including past Fraser Island.

Getting to Fraser Island

Now that we’ve unpacked the top Fraser Island activities and attractions, let’s talk logistics, including how to get to Fraser Island and get around to all the destinations on your bucket list.

To get to Fraser Island, you will need to take a ferry from the mainland. There are a few different ferry services available, departing from locations such as Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach. Choose from passenger-only ferries or ferries that allow 4WD vehicles on board. During peak season, ferries can fill up quickly, so it’s essential to book your ferry in advance to avoid delays or disappointment.

If you are travelling from Brisbane and staying on the western side of the island at Kingfisher Bay resort (more on that later) the best way to go is to drive to Hervey Bay which takes around 3 hours 30 minutes . The ferry takes approximately 50 minutes each way, and it’s recommended that you arrive at least 30 minutes before departure to ensure that you don’t miss the ferry.

But if you are staying on the eastern side of the island, save travel time by heading to Rainbow Beach and taking the 10-minute ferry.

It’s a long travel day from Brisbane, but well worth it when you arrive!

Getting Around Fraser Island

When it comes to getting around Fraser Island, there are a few different options.

One of the most popular ways to explore Fraser Island is by a 4WD vehicle. The island’s sandy terrain makes it near impossible for regular cars to navigate, so 4WD vehicles are a necessity. Even in a 4WD, the sand roads can be difficult to navigate!

If you don’t have a 4WD and can’t borrow one from a friend or family member, there are a number of rental companies on the mainland and many of them will provide ferry transport to the island as well.

Top Tip: Make sure to only drive on designated sand tracks to minimize environmental impact and be prepared with recovery gear if you do get bogged.

As mentioned above, another great way to explore Fraser Island if you aren’t keen on taking a 4WD is by taking a guided tour. There are a number of tour companies that operate on the island, offering a range of options from half-day tours to multi-day adventures.

All in all, there are a few options for you to get around the island and hit all the major attractions listed above.

Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, and as such, it’s essential to have a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle to navigate through the sandy terrain. It’s also important to note that driving a 2WD or all-wheel-drive vehicle on Fraser Island is illegal.

To avoid getting stuck in the sand or damaging your vehicle, take some time to familiarize yourself with driving conditions on Fraser Island before embarking on your trip.

Fraser Island beach driving is permitted along certain sections of the island’s coastline. However, it’s crucial to keep an eye out for incoming tides and avoid driving during high tide as this could result in your vehicle being swept away by waves. It’s also important to follow all road rules while on Fraser Island including obeying speed limits and wearing seatbelts at all times while in a moving vehicle. Once you’re on the beach, make sure you follow all traffic rules and regulations. The speed limit is 80 km / hour (50 mph).

I recommend staying at Kingfisher Bay Resort. There are great villas, cabins and houses with great amenities and dining options.

Enjoy access to the resort pool, which was great for making the most of cocktail hour, the onsite restaurant and the close proximity to the beach. It is a wonderful place in the woods yet right on the beach to relax and unwind after a busy day of exploration.

Whether you are travelling with family, friends, a loved one or riding solo, there are plenty of room options to accommodate you.
